Weather
It is clear that science and engineering has much to offer designers of stadia in terms of creating an environment that is conducive to sustainable turf growth however the one variable that is beyond control is the weather. The effects of adverse weather on turf condition can be mitigated by managing and manipulating the turf environment. A key component of this process is the availability of accurate weather data from a range of positions across the turf surface.
Recent advances in our understanding of soil physics and biological science means that it is now possible to create the optimum environment to establish and sustain natural turf in a stadium situation – as long as the design requirements are taken account of at an early stage in the development of the project scope. This will not only provide a fitting centre piece for the new stadium development, but also a facility that can be maintained in a cost-effective manner and therefore a legacy that will benefit many people for many years.
