Synthetic Sports Surfaces
TGMS Ltd are specialists in the design, specification and project management for the construction of synthetic sports surfaces. We are a completely independent consultancy practice which allows us to select the most appropriate surface, fencing, lighting and drainage depending on the clients usage needs and budgetary constraints.
Synthetic Sports Surfaces are becoming increasingly popular across a wide range of sports and throughout the full spectrum of users, from local sports clubs and schools through to Premier League Football training grounds and International Hockey.
Synthetic Sports Surfaces come in variety of different forms (see below) and are known by a variety of names, such as, all weather pitches, Synthetic turf pitches, artificial turf pitches, 3G or 3rd Generation pitches and Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA).
The reasons for this rise in popularity are due to the hard wearing and consistent performance of the playing surface. A well designed and appropriately specified All Weather Pitch can be utilised throughout the year with a level of use that would not be sustainable on a natural turf surface.
Types of synthetic / artificial turf pitches
There are numerous different products on the market with differing yarn types and pile lengths, but essentially they fall into the following categories
- 3G / 3RD Generation – This is a long pile surface (55mm – 65mm) with a rubber crumb infill. 3G is predominantly used for football and Rugby, as it closely simulates the playing characteristics of natural turf.
- Sand Filled – This is a shorter pile surface (19mm – 25mm) and is filled with sand to the top of the surface, this type of surface is predominantly use for Hockey, but can also be used for 5-a-side football and other casual sports use.
- Sand Dressed - This is a shorter pile surface (16mm – 20mm) and is dressed with sand to within 3mm -4mm of the surface, this type of surface is predominantly use for Hockey, but can also be used for 5 a side football and other casual sports use.
Types of surfaces used for Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA)
- Porous Macadam surfaces – These are durable multi use surfaces, generally used for netball, ball rebound sports and casual football.
- Polymeric surfaces – These can be used for ball rebound sports such as tennis, mini-tennis, basketball, netball and wheelchair sports.
- Synthetic Turf Surface – including shockpad and sand dressed or sand filled synthetic turf, used for five a side football, uni-hockey and tennis.
